Washing a 4×4 or ute at a self-serve bay can leave you with a shiny metal finish, but if you don't take care, those frustrating swirl marks can appear. Follow the right sequence, especially for mud removal, underbody cleaning, pressure lance use, and towel drying, and your paint stays looking sharp and protected.
Why Swirl Marks Happen
Swirl marks are fine scratches in the clear coat or paint finish. They’re most often caused by:
Dragging dirt/grit over the paint,
using the pressure wand too close to the paint work,
harsh scrubbing or circular motions, or
dirty towels or improper drying methods.
Preventing them is mostly about technique, tools, and order.
The Right Mud Removal Sequence
With a 4×4 or ute, you often deal with heavy mud, especially undercarriage, wheel wells, and tyres. Here’s a good mud removal sequence:
Pre-rinse/soakStart with a gentle rinse from a distance (using a wide-spray nozzle) to soften & loosen mud. Don’t scrub yet.
Wheels, wheel wells, and tyres firstThese are among the dirtiest parts. Clean them early so grit doesn’t migrate over cleaner panels.
Underbody & lower panelsFocus on lifting the dirt and grime that’s stuck to the lower section of the vehicle. Work in a downward motion to avoid pushing grime higher up the chassis.
Complete a full-body rinseOnce mud and debris are loosened or gone, you can rinse the whole vehicle from the top down. Gravity helps with run-off.
Wash panelsUse soap/foam and a clean wash mitt, working from the roof down, then sides, then lower panels. Because lower panels often hold more grit, save them for last to avoid dragging grit over cleaner surfaces.
Safe Use of the Pressure Wand
To avoid damaging paint (and avoid swirl marks or chips) when using the pressure wand :
Keep a safe distance from the paint. For very high pressures, keeping the wand tip 30-45 cm (or more) away reduces risk.
Don’t hold the wand in one spot for too long. Move it steadily and avoid focusing a strong jet on delicate trim, seals, or decals.
Begin with an overall rinse and only increase or focus pressure when needed (e.g. wheels, underbody), always maintaining safe distances.
Washing & Foam / Soap Techniques
Use a high-quality car wash shampoo, such as those provided at Washco Express, which won’t strip protective wax or damage clear coat.
Rinse the brush head before use to ensure any trapped dirt from the previous user is dislodged.
Wash in straight or overlapping lines rather than circular scrubs. Apply very light pressure; let the soap solution soak in to do the hard work.
Underbody Focus
Undercarriage often gets ignored, but mud here holds moisture and grit, which can splash back onto other areas of your vehicle.
Use the pressure wand to spray the undercarriage.
Rinse thoroughly before washing the body to prevent grime from transferring elsewhere.
When focusing on the underbody section, clean wheel arches and suspension components last, to avoid transferring debris.
Towel Drying Without Swirl Marks
After all rinsing and washing, you may choose to manually dry your vehicle. Using proper drying techniques is just as important to avoid swirl marks:
Use a clean, soft microfiber drying towels. If possible, use multiple towels so you’re not using an overly saturated or dirty one.
Pat or glide the towel rather than rubbing or pressing.
Start from the top and work your way down. Remove water from the roof, windows, bonnet, sides, and then lower panels.
By following this sequence and taking care with pressure, tool choice, and drying, you can wash your 4×4 or ute at a self-serve bay and still keep your paint free of swirl marks. With a little patience and the right technique, you’ll protect the finish and keep that rugged look sharp.
